Endemism

The Pyrénées are believed to provide a home to more than 250 species that are found only here - endemic to the area.

Flowers

The Pyrénées vary hugely along both their length and between their northerly ands southerly slopes.

Different weather conditions and geological processes have produced varied habitats that in turn support varied flora nd fauna.

The most famous species here are as usual the larger ones - the isard, the ibex, several species of vulture including the lammergier with it's 3 metre wingspan.

The devil is in the detail though and it is in terms of flora that the Pyrénées really mainfests it's richness. As recently as last year ecologists traversed the whole chain cataloging how the flora has evolved in the last hundred years. Looking for new undiscovered species.

Mammals

Among the other well known species are the marmotte (Marmota marmota) a large ground squirrel successfully reintroduced in the 1950's.
